This is fucking beautiful. A #pdx carpenter union member is at #OccupyICEpdx offering union positions to ICE agents willing to quit their jobs.
@slackz I would think that most ICE agents don't know much of carpentry (certainly not as much as professional carpenters). A good thought, but if training isn't given it's not much of an alternative.
(if training is given, hooray!)
@qwertystop @slackz I'm guessing there are two factors behind this. First, it's pretty unlikely people will take the offer, so making it doesn't really cost anything. On the other hand, there's huge demand for the building trades in Portland right now―for example, I just saw a big banner at "Tuff-Shed" facing onto Interstate 84 saying that they need subcontractors and installers―so if anyone did take it, training them might be worthwhile!
@slackz
This is how you bring something to the table.
@thegibson haha, took me a sec, but I tip my hat to you good netizen.
Surely doesn't take a board of directors to hammer such things out.
I've been pining for similar solutions for a long time. My stomach has been in knots with anticipation
@slackz
Just... wow.
:)
Seriously though, these sorts of things are how you peacefully undermine dangerous time and turn them into hopeful questions ones.
@thegibson haha, dont test my pun game Gibson. I throw down
Thanks for paying attention. I'm so inspired by the work that folks have been doing, and continue to do.
I always break the hardest when Black and Native folks speak about generations-long struggles for liberation. To have that much resilience, power, and maintain culture throughout unconscionable atrocities... we build on their struggle and we will fucking prevail. Love, community and justice will outlast their antithesis.
@slackz My grandather was Mescalero.
Being 3rd gen metis, I've got it easy, but he handed some culture down to me... I have a chip on my shoulder about it too,
@thegibson understandable. So glad that culture is still strong with you and your family. This land is stolen and belongs to you and them and other Native peoples of this land.
Please let me know how I can best support y'all. The horrors of colonization must end and I will do what I can to ensure that happens
This land belongs to no one, if anything, we belong to it, but I agree with your sentiment.
I am culturally not mainstream with any of the groups that made me.
I'm doing fine.
For folks with screen readers, the text (from @pxdgdc on twitter) reads:
"A union carpenter is walking around camp at #OccupyICEPDX offering DHS/ICE agents jobs with the Carpenter’s Union if they turn in their badges & walk off the line.
You don’t have to kidnap children for a living. You could have a job with benefits, high pay, respect.
Just quit. "
